Exceptional services available across the city

With the improvement of the road network all major cities are now within a reasonable distance and time frame for working in. The Aberdeen bypass now opens up Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Elgin. Whereas the continuing duelling of the A9 cuts the travel time to Inverness.

A job we carried out for Morrison Construction was at Inverness Royal Academy. Work on the demolition and asbestos removal commenced after the completion of the new school building by the Principal Contractor. With the new and old buildings being located side by side, and the school being fully operational during the works, this would be a challenging task. The steel frame building was of varying height (single to three storey) with numerous additional sections of the building having been added over time with varying depths of foundations. There were also various outbuildings including prefabricated huts and classrooms.

Before the demolition works commenced, two asbestos squads carried out the extensive asbestos removal work to the building. The notifiable section of the works consisted of 32 separate enclosures, with many being managed and completed simultaneously. This work involved the removal of AIB risers, panels and debris within classrooms, corridors and communal areas.

A full soft strip of all the buildings was carried out, segregating all the waste on site into various categories for disposal or recycling (wood, scrap, general etc.). A permit to work burning gear was used on site where necessary. There were elements of hand demolition on this site due to the close proximity to the next build, which was too close for mechanical demolition to take place. Three 35 tonne excavators were used in the demolition works, all fitted with attachments such as hydraulic crushers, steel cutting shears and hydraulic hammers. All suitable material was crushed on site and re-used to level off on completion.
