Much of our work carried out in the Aberdeen area is for tier 1 contractors. Many jobs we are contracted to carry out require demolition and/or internal strip outs as well as asbestos removal. For many clients it is an advantage that we carry out both activities, reducing the number of subcontractors employed on-site. All our work is carried out by full-time, fully qualified operatives with many years' experience working in the industry.

Often jobs can have tight deadlines and are sensitive to the surrounding environment, such as the asbestos removal and partial down-taking of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

This project consisted of the demolition of the accident and emergency single-story structure. The structure was surrounded by new builds and existing five-story structure which resulted in hand-demolition to various areas of the accident and emergency building. There were also strict rules relating to vibration, noise and dust during the works due to the close proximity of the working hospital and the nearby helipad.

Loose-fill asbestos was found in the electrical cable trays throughout the corridors located at each fire door. Continued background and personal monitoring was carried out throughout this project. 

Asbestos removal

• A total of 4 separate areas were constructed to facilitate the removal of the asbestos insulation from the electrical cable trays.
• Asbestos mastic was identified throughout the ducting (approx. 350m)
• 64m-squared of asbestos cement panelling to below windows. These were removed from a scaffold erected to the exterior. 

Demolition

• Hand demolition of 2 no. elevations adjacent to existing structures constant monitoring of vibration measures was recorded.
• Mechanical demolition was only carried out in satisfactory weather conditions to avoid debris entering the helipad area.
