5 Dangers to Watch for When Remodelling Your Home

Gowrie Contracts Ltd • Feb 02, 2022

Renovating your home can be a rewarding project, though it is also one of the most challenging ones you can do. However, there’s more than just painting and redecorating to consider as you get into the actual house design. There are dangers that may be lurking in your home and you need to know about them before you get too far into your remodel.

1. Asbestos

Most people are aware of how dangerous asbestos is but what you may not realise is that it is in a surprising amount of older buildings in the form of insulation, composite floors and ceiling panels, as well as roofing. Since it was considered strong and fireproof, the material was used everywhere possible to help protect the buildings. Unfortunately, we now know better, so when you go to renovate a space, be sure to test it for possible asbestos.

2. Lead

While lead has been illegal for use in buildings for years now, older buildings may still contain it. It’s commonly found in old pipes and in paint used on the walls. Unfortunately, when you begin to sand or chip away at the walls that are covered in lead paint, you can inhale the dust. This has been shown to cause anaemia, fertility problems, kidney disease, neuropathy, and it collects in your brain and nervous system.

3. Faulty wiring

Older buildings didn’t always have updated wiring and that is something to watch for. You never know where you might find a dangerous connection or a peeled wire that could shock you. It’s best to take extra care as you work, so you can avoid receiving an extra dose of electricity while you are trying to renovate. It’s safest to switch off the electricity if you’re not sure where the wires run, as you could stumble across one without realising it.

4. Mould

Many people discover after months or years of breathing problems that there is mould in their home. When you’re renovating, you’re more likely to disturb this and get it into the air. This can cause you to have problems with your lungs and can even lower your immune system so you get sick more often.

5. Formaldehyde

Commonly used to hold wood products together, formaldehyde has been linked to skin problems, breathing issues, and even some types of cancer. It’s often found in MDF, particleboard, and engineered wood flooring, so it’s throughout most homes. You should be careful to avoid breathing this chemical into your lungs. Out of all these potentially dangerous substances, asbestos is probably one of the biggest worries. It cannot be simply removed, you will need to bring in specialists who are trained in asbestos removal.
